The Science Behind Teeth Whitening: How It Works

A bright, white smile is associated with youth, beauty, and good oral hygiene. Teeth whitening treatments are quite popular as many celebrities have done them for years.

So, it’s essential to understand the science behind this process.

  1. Tooth discoloration. It typically occurs due to various factors, such as aging, genetics, medications, tobacco, and the consumption of coffee, tea, and red wine. Discoloration can affect the outermost layer of the tooth, known as the enamel, or the underlying layer called dentin. Teeth whitening treatments primarily target the discoloration in the enamel. ***
  2. Peroxide. Most teeth whitening treatments contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. These chemicals break down the stains into smaller, less concentrated particles. The peroxide penetrates the enamel and dentin, oxidizing the pigmented molecules and reducing their color.
  3. Oxidation. The oxidation process triggered by peroxide helps remove both extrinsic and intrinsic stains. Extrinsic stains are on the surface of the enamel and are caused by external factors. Intrinsic stains are deeper and occur within the tooth structure. The peroxide molecules react with the stain molecules, causing them to become colorless or less noticeable, resulting in a whiter appearance.

There are several different methods of teeth whitening:

  1. In-office. Professional teeth whitening performed at a dental office typically involves a higher concentration of peroxide compared to over-the-counter products. The dentist applies a protective gel or rubber shield to the gums and then applies the whitening agent to the teeth. Sometimes, a specialized light or a laser is used to enhance the whitening effects. This method provides quick and noticeable results.
  2. At home. Over-the-counter teeth whitening kits contain a lower concentration of peroxide. They have whitening gels or strips that are applied directly to the teeth. These kits are affordable but may take longer to achieve desired results compared to professional treatments.
  3. Whitening Toothpaste and Mouthwashes: Whitening toothpaste and mouthwashes work by removing surface stains using mild abrasives and detergents. While they can help maintain the whiteness of teeth, they are not as effective at removing deep stains.

Teeth whitening treatments are generally safe, but they can cause temporary side effects such as tooth sensitivity and gum irritation. These side effects typically subside after the treatment is completed. It’s essential to follow the instructions provided by the dentist or the product manufacturer to minimize the risk of complications.

To maintain the results of teeth whitening, practice good oral hygiene. Regular brushing, flossing, and dental cleanings can help prevent new stains from forming. Additionally, limiting the consumption of stain-causing foods and beverages can prolong the whiteness of your teeth.

Teeth whitening treatments harness the power of peroxide to remove stains and brighten the appearance of teeth. Whether you decide on professional in-office treatments or at-home kits, understanding the science behind teeth whitening can help you make informed decisions about achieving a brighter smile. A healthy oral care routine and lifestyle choices play a significant role in maintaining long-lasting whitening effects.
