root canal

Root canal or endodontic treatment is needed when there is an inflammation or infection in the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is a soft tissue which lies inside the tooth. The pulp houses connective tissues, nerves and blood vessels. Inflammation in the pulp may be caused due to a crack or chip in the tooth, a root fracture, repeated dental procedures, tooth decay or gum disease. The inflammation creates pressure and swelling inside the tooth, causing pain. If left untreated, a root canal infection can cause the pulp to die. Endodontic treatment, commonly known as root canal, can save the tooth from extraction and relieve you of the severe pain caused by the infection.

Signs and symptoms that indicate the need for root canal therapy:

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods
  • An abscess or pimple on the gums
  • Swelling and tenderness in the gums and teeth
  • Severe toothache

If you suffer from any of these symptoms, you should visit our office as soon as possible.

A root canal procedure requires one or two appointments at our office. The treatment begins by numbing the tooth and an opening is made at the top of the tooth to clean the infection and decay. The tooth is then sealed with a special filling material for the nerve. Afterwards the tooth will be protected with a dental crown. Some sensitivity or discomfort may occur after the procedure, but this should gradually subside with time.

If you are feeling discomfort and believe you may require a root canal treatment, call us as soon as possible at 301-984-9646 to schedule your appointment.
